Review: Otto Qi Wireless Charging Pad from Moshi

The folks at Moshi sent me their new Otto Qi Wireless Charging Pad ($39.95) to review. I've used products from them in the past and they are always beautiful and make use of nice fabrics. This latest item is just as nice, but it also has added functionality I haven't seen in many competing offerings.

The Otto is named after its inspiration, a Danish ottoman! Instead of resting your feet on it, you rest your Qi-enabled smartphone. The bottom is covered in rubber so it stays put. The fabric surface won't scratch your phone, if it's naked; and even if you have a thick case, it charges through up to 5mm (half a centimeter) worth of case. I also like that it can detect a foreign object, like a key, and disable charging. This is a great charger when you don't want it to look like you have electronic gadgets on display. In fact, if it weren't for the included USB-C cable, it might be mistaken for a fashionable coaster.

The Otto's surface has a fabric reminiscent of a nice suit, like herringbone or tweed, with rubber accents. The Otto is only offered in gray at this point, which is a little surprising, because Moshi often offers a variety of color choices for its Apple accessories. Moshi also charges extra for its fast charging adaptor, the Rewind C ($34.95.) Still, while you can find cheaper charging pads, they are often cheaply made, too, and compromise on materials or appearance.
