How to Update to the Latest Version of iOS on iPhone & iPad

iOS 12 is just around the corner, but while we were waiting for it to arrive, iOS 11.4 snuck in the back door! Apple's new iOS update includes AirPlay 2, which makes it possible to set up a HomePod Stereo Pair, support for Messages in iCloud, and many other small improvements and fixes. Ready to update to iOS 11.4? Here’s how to do it. We’ll cover what devices are compatible with iOS 11.4, and how to update your operating system so you can begin to take advantage of these new capabilities and features right away!

What Devices Are Compatible with iOS 11.4?

According to Apple, the following devices are capable of downloading and running iOS 11.4:

  • sixth generation iPod Touch 
  • iPad Air and later
  • 4th generation Apple TV and Apple TV 4k
  • iPhone 5s and later

How to Update to iOS 11.4

(It's good to note that if you don't see the update as available right away once Apple has announced its release, give it 24 hours. By then, the software update should be rolled out to all users.)

To update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch to Apple's latest operating system:

It's always a good idea to back up your device to iCloud or iTunes. After you've made your backup: 

  • Plug your device into power and make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi. 
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap on General.

  • Tap on Software Update.
  • Tap Download and Install.

This process will take a few minutes, and you'll see a notification like the one in the image below, with a blue line indicating update progress.

  • Once the new Operating System is finished downloading, tap Install Now.
  • Agree to the Terms and Conditions.
  • Your phone will power down. Then it will power back up and install.
  • Once your Lock screen comes back up, unlock your iPhone or iPad.
  • Follow any on-screen directions to complete the update.
