Apple Music: 10 Tips for Mastering Apple's Latest Music Streaming Service

Apple Music—which was unveiled at WWDC in June last year—has successfully encouraged millions of users to begin taking advantage of music streaming. However, even those who are familiar with other services (such as Spotify and Pandora) are likely to find Apple Music a tad bit overwhelming at times. Here's a collection of our favorite Apple Music tips so you can begin mastering Apple's new service. 

 
 

1) Create Music Playlists

To begin creating your own playlists, you’ll need to tap on My Music in the Music app and select Playlists at the top of the screen. Click New. You’ll be prompted to create a title and description for your playlist. Once you've done that, tap Add Songs and press the little plus sign next to the title of the song you want to add.

 


2) Adjust Music Playback

Music playback can be adjusted to get the most out of your headphones and provide the best sound regardless of your surrounding environment. To adjust music playback, go to Settings > Music and select EQ. Here you have many options to choose from. If you’re not sure which option to select, pick a song you like and select varying options to see how it affects the sound and then choose the one you like best.

 

3) Adjust Music Streaming Quality

By default, Apple Music adjusts sound quality depending on whether you're streaming music over a Wi-Fi connection or across cellular data. But you can also decide for yourself whether better music quality is worth increasing your cellular data usage or not. To change streaming music quality go to Settings > Music  and toggle Use Cellular Data on. The High Quality on Cellular tab will appear. Slide the tab on and you’re all set.

 


4) Play Music on AirPlay Speakers or on Apple TV

With AirPlay, you can stream music to your AirPlay-enabled speakers or to your Apple TV. To do this, you’ll need to make sure your iDevice, Apple TV, or AirPlay speakers are all connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Then swipe up from the bottom of your iDevice’s screen to access Control Center. Tap AirPlay. Select the device you want your music to play from.

 

 

5) Set a Volume Limit

To set a volume limit on your phone, go to Settings > Music > Volume Limit and drag the slider left or right to set your phone’s volume limit. In the main Music Settings menu, you will see that Volume Limit now says “On” if you’ve set the limit to anything other than the maximum amount.

 

 

6) Make Specific Songs Available Offline

Save all your favorite songs offline by going to My Music and then tapping the three dots located to the right of the song you’d like to save. A list of various options will appear. Select Make Available Offline. Now you can listen to the song whenever you want without having to worry about draining your data.

 


7) View Only Offline Music

Apple Music provides the option to view Only Offline Music so you don't risk using data. To make this change, go to My Music and tap on the music category. Toggle on Only Offline Music. Now in whatever music category you have selected, you will only see the music that is available offline.

 


8) Remove a Song  

To remove a song, simply go to My Music and navigate to the song you no longer want. Tap the three dots located next it and choose the option to Remove Download if you no longer need to store the offline version of the song on your device. Tap Delete from My Music if you wish to remove the tune from your collection.

 


9) Use an Apple Music Song As Your Alarm

Wake up to your favorite song by going to Apple Music and finding a song in My Music Library. Tap the three dots to the right of the song you want to use and select Make Available Offline to download it to your phone. Next, open the Clock app and either create a new alarm (by tapping the + sign at the top right of the screen) or edit an existing one (tap Edit in the upper left corner and then tap the alarm you want to edit). Tap Sound > Pick a song and then choose from Songs, Artists, Genres, etc. to select the song you downloaded. 

 


10) Time Yourself with Music

Open the Clock app on your iPhone and select Timer. Tap on When Timer Ends, scroll down, and select Stop Playing. Next, tap Set in the upper right corner. Now you can start your music, set a timer, and rock out in the shower to you favorite tunes without a worry; the music will shut itself off when it’s time to shut the water off.
